In the gentle wetlands of Bihar - where rivers thread through fields and the land whispers ancient tales - a humble aquatic seed began its journey more than two centuries ago. For generations, local farmers - many from marginalized communities - embraced the laborious art of makhana cultivation. They harvested the floating seeds from ponds, carefully dried and roasted them, turning murky pond produce into crisp, nutrient-rich treats. Over time, Dev's makhana - with its soft crunch, subtle nutty flavour and wholesome goodness - carved out a place of respect. It became a cultural marker: one of the "three proud identities" of Dev, alongside pond and fish. In 2022, this legacy was formally honoured: DEV Makhana received a Geographical Indication tag (GI tag), recognising its unique origin and guaranteeing its authenticity.
